Dear Sir

“Four Years with General Lee”, has reached me safely: pray accept my best thanks for it.  I shall read it with the deepest interest, as indeed I do everything that refers to his doings or to his character. America is too English in its feelings to refuse to do honor to the memory of her great son because he was on the losing side.

General Lee’s turn will soon come, and Americans of all classes and of all politics will feel justly proud of him before very long. I am sincerely obliged for your kind letter and the flattering things you say in it about me personably.

I remain

Dear Sir,

Very faithfully your’s

Wolseley
