D Sir

I hand herewith for examination & settlement, the accounts of Mr Francis Nelson, Agent for Mr G. W. P. Custis, from the year 1844 to the year 1854, both inclusive. These accounts were submitted by Mr Nelson to Mr Custis in the Spring of 1855; but for the want of certain vouchers, it has been impossible to have them properly settled. I have desired Mr Nelson to procure these vouchers without delay, & to transmit them to you; & I request that you will make a legal settlement of the whole account; state the true balance; transmit to Mr Custis your statement; & furnish Mr Nelson with a copy of the result. I have added to the accounts of sales obtained from Mr Nelson, a statement from McConkey Parr & Co. of accounts of sales derived from the books of their house; & I shall request Messrs Haxall, Warwick & Barksdale, & Wortham & Magruder, to transmit to you, statements of accounts of sales from their books. I authorize you however to correspond quickly with these gentlemen, & any others you may find it necessary to consult; to obtain from them such information as may be requisite to make a clear & full exhibit of the state of the account. Any explanation you may require of Mr Nelson will be readily furnished by him; & I desire that you will call upon him if necessary, & make as speedy a settlement of the matter as circumstances will permit.

I have also directed Mr Nelson to make up his accounts for the year 1855, & to transmit them to you; & I have to request that you will make a similar examination & settlement of them. Please send to Mr Custis the bill for your services Very respy
