To His Excellency Jeffn. Davis

Your telegram of July 9th. has been received. I thank you for the troops sent. My letter will inform you the state of things, the army is in good health and condition and hold a position between Hagerstown and Williamsport. The Enemy is gradually making appearance against us. I have sent all the prisoners and most of the wounded across the river.
