To Hon. Jeffn. Davis

Reports of enemy moving to Fredericksburg are not confirmed to-day. On the contrary they appear to be advancing on this route. I have crossed columns of infantry on pontoon bridges at Ellis’ and Kelly’s Fords and Rappahannock Bridge. Their cavalry have pressed ours this side of Brandy Station. Their camp seems to be in motion. I shall not fight a battle north of the Rapidan, but will endeavor to concentrate everything behind it. It would be well to send all reinforcements in Richmond to Orange C.H.

R. E. Lee.
