General Robert E. Lee, Shady Grove Church, Va.

Prisoners and deserters report Gilmore, with two divisions, about 8,000 men, still in my front. One of his Divisions with Smith’s Corps, say 16,000 men in all, have gone to White house, probably to join Grant – I have left here one Division, which can be moved to North Side of James River soon as balance of Gilmore’s Corps shall have been withdrawn, or Government shall have determined to abandon line of Communications from Petersburg to Richmond.

(Signed) G T. Beauregard
