<br /> Lee Letter: v069

Washington and Lee University

Sender: Robert E. Lee
Recipient:

Commanding officers will thoroughly examine their lines this afternoon and cause them to be strengthened as far as practicable with abattis & otherwise – They will see that the men are provided with rations and ammunition issue instructions that one third of the officers & men in the trenches be awake & on duty throughout the night & are then alert against night or early morning attacks. This can be accomplished by judicious reliefs with out too much fatigue to the men
