Sender: Robert E. Lee
Recipient: A. T. Bledsoe

Mr dear Dr

Your letter of the 27 Aug: arrived during my absence, & though prevented from replying to it earlier, by matters requiring more immediate attention, I have not been unmindful of the Subject of which it treats.

I am glad to learn that you propose to devote yourself to the discussion of the questions of literature & history, & hope that through the vehicle you have selected for the purpose, the Southern Review, they will be presented to the American people in an agreable & convincing manner.

I feel assured that this end can be best accomplished, by the exhibition of moderation, forbearance & truth. Wishing you success in your enterprise

I am with great respect

R E Lee

Dr. A. T. Bledsoe
