Sender: Robert E. Lee
Recipient: Ann L. Jones

Abstract: Letter of 16 MAR 1870 written in Lexington to Mrs. Ann L. Jones of Piedmont Station, Fauquier County, VA and in response mailed her a catalogue. Apparently the matter of tuition came up in the case of two Marshall brothers, descendants of the late Chief Justice. It would appear that a portrait of the Chief Justice was offered in payment but no provision existed for such a measure. He indicated that an agreement might be possible if the value of the portrait were known. He also mentions that if Mr. John Marshall could meet the intellectual and moral qualifications, there was a scholarship at the disposal of the President. (Perhaps the portrait in the Leyburn Library is the one mentioned in this letter.)
