Decr 17th. 63

Majr W. H. Taylor

            Maj:

I would be obliged to you if you would telegraph “Can Rodes Division move near the pike in vicinity of Dr. Terrell’s – His transportation is poor?” If you see proper you may also notify Genl Lee that there is enough timber in that vicinity for the corps. Also that Col. Pendleton found excellent camping spots about Tollersville on Central R.R. Favorable rail water & timber.

I am afraid Fitz Lees learning Staunton may enable Averill to accomplish his mischief with impunity. But I hope they will send troops from Richmond alon[g] the Ten.R.R. Is Early in telegraphic communication with Fitz Lee? & also with Richmond? It would be a consolation to catch Averill if he should increase in his damage, although it would be a vicious affair to break up the salt works.

Please let me know at your earliest convenience as to moving Rodes. He does not wish to move back to Terrells should he afterwards go to Tollersville.

Resp[fully] y[our] o[bedient] s[ervant]

R. P. Ewell

Lt. Gen.
