Dear Sir

Upon my return yesterday from an expedition to the head Waters of the Brazos & Wichita, I rec – d your letter of the 16th Ulto. I regret very much that you have been unable to balance the accounts between Mr Nelson & Mr Custis, & particularly that Mr Nelson has not given the required explanations. Should he still decline to do so, I have to request that you will settle the accounts according to the data before you, according to the rules & customs in such cases. All charges & vouchers requiring explanation can be suspended, & if subsequently found correct, can be admitted. Please notify Mr Nelson previously to closing the account, that he may have an opportunity of furnishing any information he may desire, & send me a statement exhibiting the balance. The terms upon which you offer to take charge of Mr Custis estates are acceptable to me. At this distance & in the present unsettled state of things, I can make no arrangement as yet for the coming year, until I hear from Mr Custis, to whom I have written & communicated your offer – I am very glad to hear that all my relatives are well & particularly rejoice at the intelligence you give me of my brother – Please present me in the kindest manner to all at Hickory Hill & North Wales & believe me

                     very truly yours

                     R E Lee
